I recently replaced the 30 year old carpeting in my master bedroom. There are many options out there today from wood to laminate to bamboo to low VOC carpet. I would like wood but I also wanted the softness of carpet in the bedroom. Decisions, decisions.
It took awhile to decide, but I finally opted for Low VOC carpet from Gallery of Floors in Barrie. The carpet cost a little more than regular carpeting, but the upside was no off gassing from the carpet. As you spend 8 hours sleeping this was a concern for me as I have asthma and did not want any odours and off gassing from the carpet to effect my health.
I knew I had made the right choice when my husband came home from work that day.
The first thing he said was "didn't the carpet guys come today?" He couldn't smell the new carpeting (he works on new residential construction sites all day so he knows first hand what new carpeting smells like). I told him that the carpet was in and there were no odours to speak of. We slept very well that night and I suffered no ill effects from the carpet off gassing.
So if you are in the market for new flooring, take a look at Low VOC carpet. It may be exactly what you are looking for. Especially if you are marketing a home for sale, it is a great marketing tool to use when listing the house.

Michelle - I Learned something new about flooring! Never heard of VOC before - but I do know about the smell of most new carpeting - so thanks!
Hi Diane, the difference is really remarkable. When you are standing in the flooring shop you can't truly appreciate the difference as there are so many odours in the store. I know when I pass through the flooring departments of stores like Ikea, I have to take a detour to get away from the carpet odours.
Once low VOC carpet is installed in your home though, you can appreciate the difference right away.
I have heard a very little about low VO carpeting, do they sell this at the big chains (home depot etc.) or do you have to go to a specialty store
I purchased my carpet at a flooring store. It is widely available where I live at all flooring stores.
I would inquire at Home Depot to see if your local store carries it. The carpet I purchased actually came from South Carolina.
So true Michelle - it's so important to do low VOC. Also, recycled carpets are a great choice as they have no VOC and they don't take a gallon of Petroleum for every 7 sq feet of carpet! Kym
Hi Kym, now you have me thinking. As there were no odours to speak of, I wonder if the carpet I had installed was actually recycled carpet and had no VOC's at all. I will have to look into it and find out. Thanks, M
Hi Kym, the carpeting I purchased was actually no VOC carpet. It was made from recycled pop bottles etc. It is soft underfoot and no odours at all.
Michelle, I am replacing carpet in my front room and had to find a place here that even knew what I was speaking about when I inquired about the carpeting. Doesn't say much for the salesmen's knowledge. I went several towns away until I found a wonderful place and the salesman had a wonderful selection. It did cost more but was well worth it!
This is a new thing to me. I have never heard of this type carpeting. It sounds ideal.
Hi Carole, I am so happy to hear that you found someone to help you with your choice to go green with your carpeting. It makes such a difference in your home, I know you will appreciate the investment for a long time.
Hi Barbara, If you or someone you know is considering purchasing new carpeting I encourage you to check out low VOC carpet. You will be glad you did. There are no limits on colour choice or quality. It comes in all price ranges. I went middle of the road as that is what I do with most purchases. I am completely happy with the results.
